Frequently Asked Questions

If you can't find the answer to your question here, feel free to get in touch. We're always happy to help.

Where are you based?

We are based in the United Kingdom and our prices are given in £ GBP Pound Sterling. However, we accept payment in any currency as we use PayPal to process our payments. Please e-mail us if you require a customised quote in your own currency. Editorial services in both British and American English are available.

Are you the same as vanity publishing?

Absolutely not. Vanity publishing companies charge authors to publish their books and also take a cut of the sales. At LBF, we simply provide the services you require for a straightforward cost. Your writing - and everything we produce - remains 100% your property.

Can I suggest my own ideas for the cover?

Of course. Our aim is to realise your vision and create a cover that you can be truly proud of. We happily listen to all your ideas and do our best to make them a reality, as well as bringing our own ideas to the table during the initial design stage.

Why do I need the interior of my book designed? Can't I do it myself?

A badly designed book interior is guaranteed to be noticed and cause a distracting, uncomfortable reading experience for your reader. Word Processor applications, such as Microsoft Word, are not designed or powerful enough to have the full control of typography and layout, which is vital to a professionally designed book interior. Although the very essence of interior design is that it does not draw attention to itself, it is nonetheless crucial that it is done to a professional standard.

Do I have to get my entire manuscript edited?

No: you don't even have to choose one service for all the sections that you do want edited. For example, you may have a particularly tricky chapter where nothing seems to fit together properly. This is something that we could definitely make our focus. We feel strongly about being as flexible as possible, and also provide a manuscript critique in case you have not achieved the distance from your novel to objectively see what needs to be done, and where.

How do I know what services I need?

If you are unsure, we recommend our manuscript critique. This allows us to advise you on those areas of your book that need attention, and to guide you through the process.

How do I supply my manuscript?

You can send your manuscript in most word processed file types, such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice etc. When supplying documents please format them in the following way: A4 page size, 1.5 line spacing, 2.5cm margins on all sides, with 12pt text in a standard font such as Times New Roman.

Is it necessary to get my work professionally edited?

In most cases; yes. Self-editing should be avoided as writers often lack the objectivity to make necessary changes, and it is only rarely that personal friends have the skillset to edit an entire manuscript to a high enough standard for publishing. However, our manuscript critique will highlight the extent of editing needed and we are always free for consultation to answer any queries you may have.

Do you re-write my work?

At LBF, we have a culture whereby we believe the author should retain as much control over their work as possible. On this basis, none of our packages are focused on re-writes. We can re-write small sections of your work if this is what an author desires (see contents editing), but this is outwith our standard editorial service.

What will editing actually look like? How will I know what you have changed?

With the same focus on flexibility and control, we use 'track changes' to edit manuscripts. This means that, when returned to our authors, they can easily see where we have edited their work. Moreover, they are given the simple option to accept or cancel each individual alteration. We would strongly recommend that these changes are made, however we are happy to discuss the reason for any change and ultimate control over the written word lies solely in our author's hands.

Do I have to pay upfront?

For services under £100 - yes.

For services over £100 - 50% of fees are charged after the consultation stage, with the remainder due when the service has been completed.

How do I pay?

We take payment through PayPal, meaning you can either use an existing PayPal account or just enter your credit/debit card details to make a one-off payment.
